Some of these adults now write for TV shows and films. The people who came of age during the time period are now adults who long for their youth. In order to have legit nostalgia, enough time needs to pass for two things to happen: My unscientific answer would be that it started in the mid-00s and developed in earnest about 5-6 years ago when 70s nostalgia faded. ![]() And the 90s nostalgia already started with the big "90s Kids" movement on Tumblr about 10 years ago. One thing I don't see reflected in 80s-set media is that there was a full-on 50s revival that influenced a lot of media in the early and mid-80s. And it's always later geared to remember the coolest stuff and not necessarily what was actually popular then. Then companies see they can capitalize on it, and then people who were young in that time period start creating media set in that time, or that deconstructs that time, etc, and people who weren't there become fascinated with it. I think probably young people kick off the nostalgia for their own childhoods when they start having to accept adult responsibilities. With the success of Stranger Things and American Horror Stories also paying homage to the 80s in their upcoming season it seems as though 80s nostalgia has been here for decades and shows no signs of slowing down.
